RESUMO

Transition metal complexes exhibiting thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) remain underdeveloped for organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Here, we describe a design of TADF Pd(II) complexes featuring metal-perturbed intraligand charge-transfer excited states. Two orange- and red-emitting complexes with efficiencies of 82 and 89% and lifetimes of 2.19 and 0.97 µs have been developed. Combined transient spectroscopic and theoretical studies on one complex reveal a metal-perturbed fast intersystem crossing process. OLEDs using the Pd(II) complexes show maximum external quantum efficiencies of 27.5 to 31.4% and small roll-offs down to 1% at 1000 cd m-2. Moreover, the Pd(II) complexes show exceptional operational stability with LT95 values over 220 hours at 1000 cd m-2, benefiting from the use of strong σ-donating ligands and the presence of multiple intramolecular noncovalent interactions beside their short emission lifetimes. This study demonstrates a promising approach for developing efficient and robust luminescent complexes without using the third-row transition metals.

The practical use of luminescent mononuclear gold(I) complexes as optoelectronic materials has been limited by their inferior stability. Herein we demonstrate a strategy to improve the stability of gold(I) complexes which display thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). A highly rigid and groove-like σ-donating aryl ligand has been used to form dual Au⋅⋅⋅H-C hydrogen bonds. The secondary metal-ligand interactions have been authenticated by single-crystal structure, NMR spectroscopy and theoretical simulations. The TADF AuI complex exhibits appealing emission properties (photoluminescence quantum yield=76 %; delayed fluorescence lifetime=1.2 µs) and much improved thermal and photo-stability. Vacuum-deposited organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) show promising electroluminescence with a maximum external quantum efficiency (EQE) over 23 % and negligible efficiency roll-off even at 10 000 cd m-2 . An estimated LT50 longer than 77 000 h with initial luminance of 100 cd m-2 reveals good operational stability. This work suggests a way for design of stable luminescent gold(I) complexes.

Carbene-Au-amide (CMA) type complexes, in which the amide and carbene ligands act as an electron donor (D) and acceptor (A), respectively, can exhibit strong delayed fluorescence (DF) from a ligand to ligand charge transfer (LLCT) excited state. Although the coplanar donor-acceptor (D-A) conformation has been suggested to be a crucial factor favoring radiative decay of the charge-transfer excited state, the geometric structural factor underpinning the excited-state mechanism of CMA complexes remains an open question. We herein develop a new class of carbene-Au-carbazolate complexes by introducing large aromatic substituents onto the carbazolate ligand, the presence of which are conceived to restrict the rotation of the Au-N bond and thus confine a twisted D-A conformation in both ground and excited states. A highly twisted D-A orientation is found for the complexes in their crystal structures. Photophysical studies reveal that the twisted conformation induces a decrease in the gap (ΔEST) between the lowest singlet excited state (S1) and the triplet manifold (T1) and thus a faster reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) from T1 to S1 at the expense of oscillator strength for an S1 radiative transition. In comparison with the coplanar analogue, the twisted complexes exhibit comparable or improved DF with quantum yields of up to 94% and short emission lifetimes down to sub-microseconds. The tuning of excited-state dynamics has been well interpreted by density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TDDFT) calculations, which unveil much faster RISC rates for twisted complexes. Solution-processed organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) based on the new CMA complexes show promising performances with almost negligible efficiency rolloff at a brightness of 1000 cd m-2. This work implies that neither a coplanar ground-state D-A conformation nor a dynamic rotation of the M-N bond is the key to the realization of efficient DF for CMA complexes.

Metal-based thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) is conceived to inherit the advantages of both phosphorescent metal complexes and purely organic TADF compounds for high-performance electroluminescence. Herein a panel of new TADF Au(I) emitters has been designed and synthesized by using carbazole and pyrazine-fused nitrogen-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) as the donor and acceptor ligands, respectively. Single-crystal X-ray structures show linear molecular shape and coplanar arrangement of the donor and acceptor with small dihedral angles of <6.5°. The coplanar orientation and appropriate separation of the HOMO and LUMO in this type of molecules favour the formation of charge-transfer excited state with appreciable oscillator strength. Together with a minor but essential heavy atom effect of Au ion, the complexes in doped films exhibit highly efficient (Φ∼0.9) and short-lived (<1 µs) green emissions via TADF. Computational studies on this class of emitters have been performed to decipher the key reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) pathway. In addition to a small energy splitting between the lowest singlet and triplet excited states (ΔEST ), the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect is found to be larger at a specific torsion angle between the donor and acceptor planes which favours the RISC process the most. This work provides an alternative molecular design to TADF Au(I) carbene emitters for OLED application.

Materials exhibiting excitation wavelength-dependent photoluminescence (Ex-De PL) in the visible region have potential applications in bioimaging, optoelectronics and anti-counterfeiting. Two multifunctional, chiral [Au(NHC)2 ][Au(CN)2 ] (NHC=(4R,5R)/(4S,5S)-1,3-dimethyl-4,5-diphenyl-4,5-dihydro-imidazolin-2-ylidene) complex double salts display Ex-De circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) in doped polymer films and in ground powder. Emission maxima can be dynamically tuned from 440 to 530 nm by changing the excitation wavelength. The continuously tunable photoluminescence is proposed to originate from multiple emissive excited states as a result of the existence of varied AuI ⋅⋅⋅AuI distances in ground state. The steric properties of the NHC ligand are crucial to the tuning of AuI ⋅⋅⋅AuI distances. An anti-counterfeiting application using these two salts is demonstrated.

A sensitive amine-responsive disassembly of self-assembled AuI -CuI double salts was observed and its utilization for the synergistic catalysis was enlightened. Investigation of the disassembly of [Au(NHC)2 ][CuI2 ] revealed the contribution of Cu-assisted ligand exchange of N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) by amine in [Au(NHC)2 ]+ and the capacity of [CuI2 ]- on the oxidative step. By integrating the implicative information coded in the responsive behavior and inherent catalytic functions of d10 metal complexes, a catalyst for the oxidative carbonylation of amines was developed. The advantages of this method were clearly reflected on mild reaction conditions and the significantly expanded scope (51 examples); both primary and steric secondary amines can be employed as substrates. The cooperative reactivity from Au and Cu centers, as an indispensable prerequisite for the excellent catalytic performance, was validated in the synthesis of (un)symmetric ureas and carbamates.

OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the rule of changes in serum GGT activity, as well as GGT/ALT and AST/ALT ratios, in primary hepatic carcinoma (PHC) patients with different alpha-fetal protein (AFP) levels. METHODS: GGT, AST and ALT were detected in 370 PHC patients with positive HBs-Ag using a automatic biochemical analyzer, and AFP was detected using a Roche E170 modular analytics immunoassay analyzer. GGT level, as well as AST/ALT and GGT/ALT, ratios were compared among PHC patients with different AFP levels. RESULTS: As shown in Table 1, GGT levels were 109.59 ± 111.06, 151.13 ± 190.43, 135.86 ± 107.62, 151.36 ± 176.59 and 172.58 ± 188.84, respectively, in the groups of primary PHC patients with AFP levels of ⩽ 10, 10-100, 100-200, 200-400 and ⩾ 400 ng/ml; and the differences among these groups were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). AST/ALT ratios were 1.55 ± 1.02, 1.30 ± 0.81, 2.02 ± 1.89, 2.12 ± 1.11 and 1.73 ± 1.25, respectively; and the differences among these groups were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). GGT/ALT ratios were 3.43 ± 3.12, 3.57 ± 5.70, 3.57 ± 2.94, 3.89 ± 4.58 and 3.43 ± 3.61, respectively; and the differences among these groups were not statistically significant (P> 0.05). CONCLUSION: For patients with chronic hepatitis B and cirrhosis after hepatitis B, no matter how AFP level is, when liver function report reveals increased GGT, AST/ALT > 1 and GGT/ALT > 1 (that is, AST > ALT and GGT > ALT), even if AFP is negative, we should also be alert to the existence of PHC.

BACKGROUND: The N400 component of event-related potentials (ERP) has recently drawn widespread attention at home and abroad. This study was to explore the relationship between N400 changes and risperidone treatment and rehabilitation infirst-episode schizophrenia (FES). METHODS: ERP component N400 was recorded by Guangzhou Runjie WJ-1 ERP instruments, in 58 FES before and 6 months, 15 months after risperidone treatment, and in 62 normal controls. The patients' syndromes were assessed by Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS). And the stimuli are Chinese sentences with matching (congruent) or mismatching (incongruent) ending words. RESULTS: N400 latencies were prolonged, and amplitudes were decreased in Cz, Pz, Fz, C3, C4, in FES compared with in NC, before treatment. The prolonged N400 latencies and decreased amplitudes were negatively correlated with the patients' positive scale and total scale of PANSS. There are significant differences of N400 amplitudes and latencies in 6 months and 15 months follow-up after treatment. Before treatment, 6 months and 15 months after treatment, N400 latencies are 446 ± 35 ms, 440 ± 37 ms, 414 ± 31 ms (F = 9.72, P < 0.01) in incongruent situation; N400 amplitudes are 5.2 ± 4.6 µV, 5.7 ± 4.8 µV, 7.3 ± 5.0 µV (F = 2.06, P > 0.05) in congruent situation, and 8.5 ± 5.9 µV, 10.1 ± 5.0 µV, 11.9 ± 7.0 µV (F = 3.697, P < 0.05) in incongruent situation. CONCLUSIONS: N400 could be used to predict the effects of treatment of schizophrenia to some degree. The linguistic and cognitive impairment in schizophrenia can be improved by antipsychotic drugs.
